Manassas Divorce Attorneys

Divorce is an emotional situation that nobody wants to go through. Couples marry with the intention of lifelong bliss. When a divorce is imminent, it can be tough to handle. That is why hiring a lawyer is in your best interest. Many people think they save money by handling the situation on their own, but the truth is that a divorce is a legal action that requires significant specialized expertise. A DIY situation is not easy, nor is it in your best interests.Ā

Need help with your divorce? Contact the Manassas divorce attorneys from Virginia Family Law Center. We have more than 30 years of family law experience, so you can count on us to know our stuff.Ā

What are the Requirements for Divorce?

The divorce requirements in the Commonwealth of Virginia depend on whether you choose a fault or no-fault divorce. For a no-fault divorce, you must have lived in the state for the last six months. Also, you and your spouse must have lived separately and apart from each other for at least one year prior to the divorce. With no minor children, this requirement is reduced to six months of living separately.Ā

The Commonwealth of Virginia also allows fault-based divorces, in which you must prove one of the following:

  • Your spouse has committed adultery.
  • Your spouse has caused you to reasonably fear bodily harm.
  • Your spouse has a felony conviction that resulted in a prison sentence.
  • Your spouse willfully deserted or abandoned you.

How a Lawyer Can Help You

Why should you hire a divorce lawyer? They can give you the following:

  • Specialized knowledge. Divorce laws can vary from one state to another and even from one jurisdiction to another.Ā  A divorce lawyer has specialized knowledge that can help them navigate the legal system effectively. They understand the relevant laws to protect your legal rights.
  • Objective advice. Going through a divorce is an emotional experience. A divorce lawyer provides practical advice and can help you understand the long-term implications of your choices.
  • Help with paperwork. Divorce involves a lot of paperwork, including court filings, petitions, and financial disclosures. A divorce lawyer can organize all these documents and submit them on time. This will help reduce delays and mistakes that can harm your case.
  • Negotiation and settlement. Divorces do not always go to trial. Many are negotiated and settled. A skilled divorce lawyer can help with negotiations and advocate for your rights while doing so, getting you the best outcome possible.
